Walk // Drive // Latch

Gates around Cottondale.

A gate is the part of the fence you touch every day, so it has to open easy and latch every time.

Walk gates are the everyday door through the fence, for people, wheelbarrows and hand carts.

Double drive gates and wide gates open up for mowers, trailers and boats.

Gates are hung in wood, vinyl, chain link and aluminum, matched to the fence they sit in.

A wide gate is heavy and wants to sag, so the frame is braced and the hinge post has to be solid.

Hinges and latches are picked for the size of the gate, and set so the latch lines up.

Florida’s pool barrier rules (F.S. 515.29) call for at least 4 feet and a self-closing, self-latching gate.

Southern Line Fence & Finish hangs gates out of Cottondale, across Jackson County and nearby towns.

What the job includes

From the first stake to the last latch.

  1. Measure the opening

We measure the opening and ask what has to fit through: a person, a mower, a trailer or a boat.

  2. Style and material

Wood, vinyl, chain link or aluminum, picked to match the fence the gate sits in.

  3. Framed and braced

The frame is braced so the gate holds its shape and does not drop at the latch side.

  4. Hinges and latches

Hinges and latches are picked for the gate size, then set so the latch lines up every time.

  5. Self-closing pool gates

Pool yards need a self-closing, self-latching gate. Ask us about the hardware you want.

  6. A swing test

Before we leave, you open, close and latch every gate to make sure it swings true.

Know the options

Before you pick a gate.

Three gate types cover most yards, and the right one depends on what has to get through.

The wider the gate, the more weight hangs off the hinge post, so the frame and the post matter.

A gate that drags or will not latch is often a post or frame problem, not a hinge problem.

Tell us what has to fit through and we will tell you straight which gate to hang.

Walk gate
For people, wheelbarrows and hand carts. Light to swing and easy to latch.
Double drive gate
Two leaves that open wide for trucks and trailers. Each leaf is lighter to swing.
Wide single gate
One wide leaf for a mower or a boat. It needs a stout frame and a solid hinge post.

Worth knowingLift the latch end of a sagging gate. If the hinge post moves, the post is the problem, not the gate.

How it goes

Four steps, one straight line.

  1. Call or text

Call (352) 299-2686 and tell us what the gate has to let through. A photo of the opening helps.

  2. Quote

We measure the opening and quote the gate, the material and the latch you picked.

  3. Frame and hang

The gate is framed and braced, then hung on solid posts and checked for square.

  4. Swing and latch

Swing the gate open and shut and latch it with us before we pack up.

Questions

About gates.

How wide should my gate be?

A walk gate only has to fit a person and a wheelbarrow.

A drive gate has to clear your widest truck, trailer or boat with room on each side, so measure the widest thing and tell us.

Can a gate be added to my existing fence?

If the posts on each side of the opening are solid, a gate can often be added.

Text a photo of the fence and the spot to (352) 299-2686 and we will tell you straight what it takes.

Do pool gates have to self-close?

Florida’s pool barrier rules (F.S. 515.29) call for at least 4 feet and a self-closing, self-latching gate.

Tell us it is a pool yard when you call, and ask us about the hardware.

My gate sags. Can it be fixed?

Often.

A sagging gate is usually a loose hinge, a racked frame or a hinge post that has shifted, and many can be fixed without a new gate.

Call (352) 299-2686 and send a photo. See our fence repair page.
