Pine // Privacy // Picket

Wood Fences around Cottondale.

Wood is the classic backyard fence, and the easiest one to shape to a yard.

Most wood fences are built from pressure-treated pine, which is treated to resist rot and termites.

The posts carry the whole fence, so each one goes in plumb and on a pulled string line.

Rails run between the posts, and the boards are fastened to the rails one at a time.

Privacy, picket, board-on-board and shadowbox are the usual styles, and custom designs are welcome.

Gates are built from the same boards, so the whole run reads as one piece.

Southern Line Fence & Finish builds wood fences out of Cottondale, across Jackson County and nearby towns.

Google reviewers call the crew easy to work with and fairly priced.

What the job includes

From the first stake to the last latch.

  1. A look at the yard

Tell us what the fence is for, where it runs and how many gates it needs.

  2. A clear quote

You get a quote for the footage, the height, the style and the gates before a day is set.

  3. Posts on the line

Corners are staked, a string line is pulled tight, and every post is set plumb along it.

  4. Rails and boards

Rails are fastened to the posts, then the boards go on one at a time with even spacing.

  5. Gates that latch

Gates are framed and braced so they stay square, then hung so the latch lines up.

  6. Cleanup and a walk

Offcuts and scraps are picked up, and you walk the finished fence before we leave.

Know the options

Before you pick a style.

Three wood styles cover most backyards, and the difference shows up a year later.

Pine boards go up wet and shrink as they dry, so a tight fence can open small gaps.

A solid fence also catches wind like a sail, which matters in storm season.

Tell us what the fence is for and we will tell you straight which style fits.

Stockade
Boards side by side. Small gaps can open as the pine dries.
Board-on-board
Boards overlap, so there are no gaps even after the wood shrinks.
Shadowbox
Boards alternate on both sides. It looks finished from either yard.

Worth knowingNew pressure-treated pine is wet. Let it dry out before you stain or seal it, so the finish soaks in.

Questions

About wood fences.

How tall can my backyard fence be?

Six feet is the usual backyard privacy height.

The limit for your lot is set by your city or county, and by your HOA if you have one, so check both before you order.

Which side of the fence faces the neighbor?

Many places ask for the finished side to face out, toward the street and the neighbors.

A shadowbox fence looks the same from both yards, which settles the question.

How do I make a wood fence last?

Keep the boards off the soil, seal or stain the wood once it has dried, and fix a loose board or a leaning post early.

Small repairs keep a fence standing.

Do you repair wood fences too?

Yes.

Leaning sections, broken boards and sagging gates can often be fixed without replacing the whole fence.
